After raising and showing angora rabbits from 2018-2025, we have decided to take a different approach to our breeding program for our small homestead.
With the size of our farm, we still love a multipurpose livestock. We are developing our own line of rabbits for wool and fur traits and a variety of colors and sizes.
We raise our rabbits in hanging cages in a barn we built for them in the shade with fans and heat lamps in freezing temperatures. We built wooden boxes under the hanging cages to collect their poop, as well as hay and feed that falls from the cage. We started raising earthworms for vermicomposting.
Our rabbits our raised for their personalities, ability to thrive in a hot, humid climate that also has cold periods in winter. Wool for spinning, fur for pelts, meat, and fertilizer. They can range in size from a 3-4 lb dwarf breed to a 8-10 lb commercial breed.
We currently have lutino genetics and breeds from satin, satin angora, Jersey Wooly, American Fuzzy Lop, Lionhead and English Angora. We breed mixed breeds as well for their variety of color, wool, personality, shapes and sizes.
Things to consider when purchasing wool breed rabbits, besides basic needs of housing and feed:
- They can live 7-9+ years.
- They need protection from extreme temperatures and predators.
- Do you have time to keep regular maintenance of their coats to avoid matting?
- Are you prepared to clip their coats when they need to be done, or know someone that can do it?
- Are there zoning laws that restrict you from raising and/or breeding rabbits?
- If you breed them, do you have space for their offspring?
